All About Medicaid

A mother and her baby girl are in a doctor's office.

If you can’t afford healthcare coverage for yourself or your family, don’t go without. Your health is too important. Look into Medicaid as an option.

Medicaid is state-administered program available only to certain low-income individuals and families who fit into an eligibility group that is recognized by federal and state law. Payments from the program are sent directly to your health care providers. Depending on your state's rules, you may also be asked to pay a small part of the cost (a co-payment) for some medical services.

Requirements for eligibility might include your age, whether you are disabled, blind, aged or pregnant; your income and resources (like bank accounts, real property, or other items that can be sold for cash); and whether you are a U.S. citizen or a lawfully admitted immigrant. There are special rules for those who live in nursing homes and for disabled children living at home. A child may eligible even if the parent is not. Rules vary from state to state.

Even if you’re not sure if you qualify, apply and allow a caseworker to sort out your situation. To check your state's eligibility requirements, visit the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services today.
