Volunteering and Work Experience

Question: How do you get work experience when no one wants to give you the first opportunity?

Answer from Steven Joiner, Director, Career Transitions Program, Idealist.org

Intentionally volunteer! This means to find or create an opportunity in an organization that has a need for a skill that you want to develop. A lot of people think of volunteering as only benefiting a non-profit, but volunteering should be a mutually beneficial experience.

Organizations need a lot of work done on a limited budget, and you need the chance to work on your skills. By saying, "I see you need X and I can do that for you," you help non-profits while also gaining yourself the experience you need.
