Ask the Expert: What Foods Should I Avoid if I am Diabetic?

Question:

I have type 2 diabetes. What foods should I avoid if I am diabetic? I'm a meat and potatoes type of guy, and I've never really eaten a lot of sweets. Is there a list of foods for a diabetic to eat?

Expert Response:

I’m sure you’ll be happy to know that in fact, there is NO food that people with diabetes should avoid completely.  In addition there is no need to cut out all sugar. There are certain kinds of sugars, as well as other food types, that need to be eaten only in moderation. As a general guideline, do your best to avoid:

  • Foods containing white sugar or white flour
  • Fried foods of any kind
  • Processed foods or foods containing lots of preservatives
  • Fast foods that are high in fat

If there is a food that you really enjoy, you can still eat it.  You can eat it either in moderation, or you can find a new, healthier recipe that will allow you to eat it as a larger part of your meal.
